If you use an analog or digital scanner with eDispatches hardware and encounter missed alerts or audio static, use this guide to test signal reception and eliminate local radio interference.
Step 1: Verify Frequency & Conduct an Audio Test
First, verify that your scanner is programmed to the correct receive (RX) frequency. If the frequency is incorrect, see our Reset Uniden Scanner Guide for reprogramming steps.
To verify signal reception:
- Unplug the 3.5mm audio cable from the back of the scanner so audio plays through the internal speaker.
- Request a test count or test page from your dispatch center.
- Listen directly to the scanner speaker during the transmission test.
Audio Test Results
- Clear Transmission Heard: Reconnect the audio cable to the back of the scanner and resume normal operation.
- No Audio or Static Heard: Reconnect the cable and proceed with the signal optimization steps below.
Step 2: Eliminate Electronic Interference
Keep eDispatches hardware and scanners away from wireless routers, cordless phones, power supplies, and other electrical equipment. Electromagnetic interference from nearby devices can cause signal degradation and missed alerts.
Step 3: Connect an External Antenna
Attach the provided external antenna (or a dedicated outdoor antenna) via the BNC connector on the back of the scanner. External antennas significantly improve reception in buildings constructed with metal roofs or heavy shielding.
Critical Safety Warning: Never split or tap into an active transmitting radio antenna line. Transmit power will permanently damage the scanner receiver circuitry.
Step 4: Relocate the Detector Equipment
If signal issues persist after completing all prior steps, move the eDispatches detector and scanner to a higher elevation or closer to the primary dispatch radio tower site.
